Akonga Kete Ki was given to us for this programme. It relates to understanding your true identity, your rights and responsibilities, and the permissions you should seek before filling your kete.

It’s also about:

  • Connecting people to their rights and responsibilities in relation to the land and sea with a focus on conservation and sustainability
  • Connecting people to their whanau and hapu aspirations
  • Providing people with safe access to their underwater environment via scuba diving and marine activities
  • “Ka tu ki uta, Ka noho ki te moana” – “Guardians of the incoming and outgoing tides”

Programme Outline

The purpose of this programme is to take students who are interested in a career in any one of the sectors that constitute the Scuba Diving Industry while embedding knowledge of Matauranga Maori. As a student you will receive both theory and practical knowledge while completing the required logged hours. This will prepare you for employment in the industry or further study at a more advanced level.

4398 Complete deep dives to between 18 and 40 metres, and perform tasks


4402 Complete a dive off a boat


6400 Manage first aid in an emergency situation

23349 Administer supplemental oxygen at the surface to divers experiencing physiological problems

Course Expectations
