Kaiako Ruku Kai Mataitai means ‘Dive Instructor’ and all the roles and responsibilities involved in this.

It’s also about:

  • Connecting people to their rights and responsibilities in relation to the land and sea with a focus on conservation and sustainability
  • Connecting people to their whanau and hapu aspirations
  • Providing people with safe access to their underwater environment via scuba diving and marine activities
  • “Ka tu ki uta, Ka noho ki te moana” – “Guardians of the incoming and outgoing tides”

Programme Outline

The purpose of this programme is to train qualified dive instructors who have the ability to work in the dive, marine, aquaculture or adventure tourism industries while embedding knowledge of Matauranga Maori. Note: Units with a ‘*’ are achieved as part of the Certificate in Master Diving Level 4

Course Expectations

  • Full time
  • 15 weeks
  • 30 logged dives
  • 3-4 days per week
  • Minimum 22 hours contact time per week
